The History of Palais du Désert Hotel & Spa
"Palais du Désert is an oasis of comfort in the heart of the desert, a dream rooted in the land of Tafilalet, and a living tribute to the beauty of southern Morocco"

A Dream Born from the Kasbahs of Tafilalet, Now an Oasis of Comfort and Beauty
In the heart of the ksours of Tizimi, where the desert sands still whisper the legends of Tafilalet, stands a palace like no other. Palais du Désert Hôtel & Spa is more than a hotel – it is the realization of a dream deeply rooted in history, the land, and the heart of a man native to this region.
Born and raised in a modest house nestled within an ancient kasbah on the outskirts of Tizimi, the owner of the Palais grew up with breathtaking views of the palm groves, earthen walls, and star-filled skies. As a young boy, he worked at a neighboring luxury hotel — an experience that opened his eyes. It was there that the idea was born: to one day build his own "palace-kasbah," a living tribute to the grandeur of southern Morocco and the legendary hospitality of its people.
A Site Chosen with the Heart
Like the oasis builders of old, he chose to place his palace on the edge of the palm grove, where kasbahs once flourished and enriched the region. The location was no coincidence: the surrounding ksours tell the millennia-old story of Tafilalet, cradle of the Alaouite dynasty — Morocco's reigning royal family. Here, every stone holds memory.
A Kasbah Reinvented as a Palace
The architecture, designed as a bridge between past and present, blends the strength of Berber kasbahs with the refined elegance of Moroccan princely palaces. The style draws inspiration from the royal residences of Alaouite sultans, while remaining faithful to the vernacular traditions of the South.
Among the noble materials used, rammed earth (pisé) takes center stage. This ancient building technique, typical of the old kasbahs of Tafilalet, has been revived with care and passion. To build with pisé is to build with the soul of the earth. This living, naturally insulating material keeps rooms cool while creating a soft and warm atmosphere. Its use is both a tribute to local craftsmanship, a gesture of environmental respect, and a way to revive traditional architecture in a high-end setting.
Craftsmen were brought from Fez and Marrakech — masters of tadelakt, zellige beldi, and carved plaster — to breathe life into ancestral skills. Materials were chosen with utmost care: fossilized marble from the region lines the floors, while walls coated in tadelakt reflect the golden desert light.
A Philosophy of Authenticity
More than just a place to stay, Palais du Désert is an invitation to experience Morocco in its most authentic form. The spirit of the place draws on the cherished values of the South: genuine hospitality, preserved tradition, and respect for nature.
The environment is at the heart of the project: bioclimatic architecture, local materials, vast gardens nourished by traditional irrigation systems. The hotel integrates into its surroundings with humility and ambition.
A Moment Suspended in Time
Those lucky enough to stay here never forget the magic of the evening: the sky ignites with thousands of stars, the silence of the desert wraps around the soul, and a simple walk among the date palms becomes a journey in itself. It is in these suspended moments that the Palais reveals its true spirit.
A Vision for the Future
The adventure has only just begun. An expansion project aims to enrich the immersive experience for guests, adding more wellness spaces, cultural activities, and explorations around the oasis. Palais du Désert remains true to its promise: to offer a haven of peace where comfort, tradition, and elegance come together in perfect harmony.
